Introduction and General Information
In our first article, we will discuss general information about caravans, the concept and use of caravans in our country and in the world, and the types of caravans.
The use of caravans has been widespread for many years, especially in the USA and Europe, and during the pandemic period, it became a hot topic in our country and attracted great interest.
These vehicles, which are used for various purposes, are primarily divided into two main categories as towing caravans and moto caravans, each of which has different types within itself.
In this article, we will share information for those who want to acquire a caravan to help them choose the model that suits their needs.

Caravan Selection
The choice of the caravan, the user:
- How many people will be traveling with
- How often to use a caravan
- What kind of trips (off-road, nature camps, free accommodation in central locations, campsites, etc.)
depends on such factors. These choices are an important issue that will directly affect the initial investment cost and ease of use of the motorhome.
Since there are not enough camping areas and caravan service points in our country yet, users are forced to make their vehicles more equipped, more electricity, more water, more dirty water storage (more electricity capacity, water storage, etc.). However, caravan service points, which are widely available on the roads in Europe, make it possible to vacation with less equipped vehicles due to the high number and affordability of caravan campsites.
Therefore, when choosing a motorhome in our country, it is important to determine the most suitable model according to your needs.
Towing Caravan

Caravan Types
Tensile Caravans
- The bunk bed system is an ideal option, especially for families with children, due to its more affordable price and large interior volume.
- O1 certified towing caravans under 750 kg have been the most preferred model in our country for a long time as they are exempt from inspection and tax procedures. However, with the new regulations, these vehicles will now be weighed and these caravans over 4mt built on 100kg capacity chassis will unfortunately mostly not meet the O1 requirements and those in the O2 class will need annual inspection, MTV and traffic insurance and the appropriate driver’s license.
- In order to use a towing caravan, a towing vehicle with the appropriate engine power is needed.
- Factors such as the lack of CE-certified chassis and axles in cheap models and the lack of stabilizers can make towing difficult and dangerous.
- The problem of parking is growing in our country, so if you don’t have a plot of land or you don’t park in paid campsites, it becomes quite difficult to stay freely.
- Moto caravans have almost similar parking difficulties, but since they are motorized land vehicles, they have the legal right to park in many places. It is easier to set up and pack up when you reach the campsite, it has more storage and luggage space, besides, when you set up the vehicle in the campsite, you will need to carry a bicycle or motorcycle for shopping or similar needs, your vehicle will remain idle in towed caravans.
- In the light of this information, if a towing caravan is to be purchased, if it is no longer a very mini caravan, it seems more accurate to turn directly to O2 caravans and caravans with stabilizers installed on CE certified chassis and axle substructure, since their scale weights will be over 750 kg.
GRP Panel

Material Selection for Tensile Caravans
In addition to the chassis, the body structure is also an important factor when choosing a caravan. The most common materials are:
- Monoblock Fiber Crates: Better water tightness as there are no splices. Quality depends on the fiber thickness and density used.
- Composite Cases: Offer more economical solutions but are weak in terms of robustness and insulation.
- GRP Panels: Since the ceiling, front and back sections are one piece, it has good water tightness and high insulation power. It is one of the middle class economic models.
MotoCaravan

Moto Caravans
Moto caravans have legal advantages when it comes to parking as they are a motorized vehicle. Once users arrive at the campsite, they are easier to set up and usually offer more storage space.
However, when shopping or transportation is needed, it is necessary to carry a bicycle or motorcycle. With a towing caravan, this is not a problem as the tow vehicle remains idle.
Moto caravans are divided into some different models.
Moto Caravan Types
Campervan (Panel Van Conversion Caravans)
- The original minibus chassis is converted into a caravan without any intervention.
- It is the most popular model due to its more compact structure, selectable size, ease of parking, fuel economy, ease of driving and economy.
- Just like the towed caravan, the frame is manufactured using fiber monoblock, ctp panel and composite material.
Semi-Integrated Caravans
The need for a semi-integrated vehicle is used to have a larger space on the minibus substructure, 30-40 cm wider and 1-1.5 meters longer than an average vehicle, providing a larger living space.
- The back of the van is cut off or only the chassis of the existing vehicle. These are the models made by combining the chassis and the driver’s part.
- It offers more living space, but is sensitive to fuel consumption and highway winds.
- In Alkovenian models, it means the body overhang above the driver and a luggage or bed space placed there.
Fully Integrated Caravans
- The entire chassis, except the chassis, is canceled and a caravan body is built from the ground up.
- In our country, this model is not very common in manufacturing, but we come across imported products, we can say that it is the most expensive group in terms of price.
Alkovenian Caravan

When choosing a caravan, it is important to consider your intended use and your needs.
- If you are thinking of buying a towing caravan, keep in mind that options under 750 kg can be classified as O2 with the new regulations and prefer models with CE certified chassis and stabilizers.
- If you are going to buy a motorhome, consider ease of driving, fuel consumption and parking.
Both models have their advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the model that best suits your travel style will ensure you have the best caravan experience.
